Responsibly Harvested Alaskan King Crab Meat

At Maine Lobster Now, we know the long-term sustainability of seafood products is an issue deeply connected to Maine and other coastal communities all across the world. In order to offer you Alaskan king crab meat today and in the future, we work only with fisheries that follow all local, federal, and international rules and regulations to responsibly harvest king crab to ensure continued access to these crustaceans for future generations.

Unmatched Quality and Freshness

Maine Lobster Now sources crabmeat to be the freshest, tastiest it can be for our customers. Prized by local fishermen, our Alaskan king crabs are caught in the frigid waters off Alaska and Norway. When it lands at the docks, it is immediately cooked, sometimes brined, and flash-frozen before it’s shipped directly to us. It’s impossible to experience fresher Alaskan king crab unless you take a boat out on the water and catch it yourself (which we don’t recommend).

Where Your Crab Comes From

As part of our commitment to sustainable seafood, Maine Lobster Now responsibly sources red king crabs from two distinct regions of the world. Traditionally, Alaskan red king crab has been sourced from, you guessed it, the Alaskan coast in the Bering Sea.

We also source Alaskan red king crab from a growing, invasive population that migrated north of Norway. This helps Norway combat the threat and maintain a more viable ecosystem in their waterways while ensuring the beloved seafood is caught using traditional, sustainable methods.

Unlike many of our competitors, we do not source our crabs from Russia, due to lax oversight and accountability of sustainable fishing practices in the region.

Serving Size

How Many People Will a 5-6 lb. Whole Alaskan Red King Crab Feed?

Ordering Whole Alaskan king crab can be confusing because the weight includes both the meat and hard exoskeleton around it. Use this simple estimate when preparing for how much food you’ll need. Crabs yield about 50% meat to 50% shell, so you’ll have a whopping 2.5-2.9 lbs. of meat or 40-47 oz. total. The standard serving size of crab meat is 5 oz.

That means 1 Whole Alaskan King Crab will easily be enough to feed 8-9 people, especially when it’s served with classic New England appetizers and side dishes to complement your seafood feast. We recommend shrimp cocktail, red potatoes – great for baking, frying, or mashing – or corn on the cob. Round out your whole king crab dinner with a sweet treat, like Maine Pie Co.’s delicious Blueberry Pie to share with the family or dinner party.

Nutritional Benefits

Nutritional Benefits of Alaskan King Crab Meat

Crabmeat is a high-protein meat source that comes packed with vitamins and minerals. Like other shellfish and seafood we sell, crab could be added to the growing list of “superfoods” health experts recommend.

Crabmeat offers a whopping 16 grams of protein per 3 oz. serving. Crabmeat also contains vitamins B12 and C, and the antioxidants zinc and selenium. Zinc helps support bone mass and immune function, while selenium aids in preventing cellular damage. And there’s more. Crabmeat is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help lower inflammation and can reduce the risk of heart disease.
