Sustainable Aquaculture at Bangs Island

Bangs Island grows its mussels on suspended ropes in Maine’s Casco Bay and cultivates kelp alongside them. The producer describes this approach as sustainable aquaculture. Mussels feed naturally by filtering the surrounding water, without added feed.

Mussels are a highly nutritious food, rich in high-quality protein and low in fat, particularly saturated fat. They provide essential omega-3 fatty acids that support heart health, as well as being a great source of vitamins like B12, which aids brain and nerve function, and important minerals such as iron, zinc, and selenium. Mussels are also low in calories, making them a healthy choice for maintaining weight while promoting overall health, particularly for immune function, cardiovascular health, and muscle growth.
