Reviewed September 22, 2026. Maine scallop season is not one continuous statewide opening. Calendars differ by fishing zone and harvest method, with additional area restrictions and possible in-season changes. For shoppers, that means fresh availability can vary even during the broader winter season.
What the 2026–27 proposal says
Maine DMR’s published 2026–27 Chapter 11 proposal describes different calendars for draggers and divers. It proposes 60 harvest days in Zone 1, 70 in Zone 2, and 50 in Zone 3, with opening and closing dates varying by method. Proposed openings range from November into December; some proposed calendars extend into spring.
A proposal is not an operative fishing calendar. Consult DMR’s adopted rules, the relevant zone calendar, and any emergency closures before harvesting. The proposal is useful for understanding the structure of the coming season, but its dates should not be presented as a guaranteed delivery or harvest schedule.

What season means when shopping
When buying Maine scallops , check the actual product’s origin, fresh or frozen format, and available delivery dates. A seasonal article cannot guarantee that a particular size or product is in stock. Frozen scallops can offer flexibility beyond a short fresh-harvest window.
Choose size and treatment
Count labels describe approximate pieces per pound: 10/20 means roughly ten to twenty, while U/10 means fewer than ten. “Dry” indicates scallops sold without added water or phosphate treatment. “Dayboat” describes the trip, while “diver” describes the harvest method.
Prepare them for the meal
Review how to cook scallops before cooking. Thaw frozen scallops in the refrigerator according to their packaging, pat them dry for searing, and leave room in the pan. Cook until the flesh is firm and opaque; a translucent center should not be offered as a universal safety endpoint.
For fresh Maine scallops, use the current product listing and delivery calendar to plan your dinner. Check the selected package size and have refrigerator space ready for arrival.
