Humble Beginnings

Here at Maine Lobster Now, we're excited to share the inspiring story of The Holy Donut. Leigh Kellis, a visionary single mother, transformed her apartment kitchen into a donut laboratory with just passion, love, and a counter-top fryer. Motivated by a desire to create a healthier donut she could confidently share with her daughter, Leigh set out to craft something truly special. Her goal was to make not just any donut, but a magical one made with wholesome, trusted ingredients.

Locally Loved

Leigh’s path wasn’t paved with sugar and ease. It demanded perseverance, countless trials, and a belief in her product’s uniqueness. Her breakthrough came when she stepped out of her kitchen’s comfort zone, introducing her donuts to local coffee shops. Leigh’s donuts were not just well received; they were a sensation! Securing her first wholesale order of seven dozen donuts a week was a testament to her hard work and the undeniable appeal of her potato donuts.

A Family Affair

Behind her success was a supportive family. Her father, Allan, helped with everything from peeling potatoes to making deliveries, asking for nothing in return. Her mother, Cynthia, invested her savings, and her sister, Elizabeth, left her job to join the venture, working for tips in the early days. Her brother-in-law, Jeff Buckwalter, brought structure and vision to the growing business. In 2012, their collective efforts culminated in the opening of the first Holy Donut shop in Portland.

The Holy Donut quickly became a beloved local institution, and the business grew with the involvement of even the youngest family members: Avery, Riley, Kady, and Griffin. This story is more than just about donuts; it’s a testament to the power of a dream, a family’s love, and the community that embraced them. Now, thanks to our collaboration with The Holy Donut, you can enjoy these exceptional treats delivered right to your door, no matter where you are.
